The poultry industry is being urged to take action as animal rights activists intensify efforts to block planning applications for new livestock units across the UK. One such application, submitted by a farm in Sheriffhales, South Shropshire, will be heard by planners on 6 June and has become the latest target of a coordinated campaign by Animal Rising under the banner “No New Factory Farms.”
The proposal includes four linked poultry houses, feed facilities, biosecure waste management systems, and other associated infrastructure. However, opposition has been fuelled by the Coalition Against Factory Farming, which has made it its mission to oppose every livestock-related planning application in the UK.
The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (AIMS) is urging all poultry professionals, regardless of location or sector, to register their support for this and other applications, warning that failure to do so could enable activist groups to sway planning committees.
“Supporting each other is essential,” said AIMS. “Planning decisions are increasingly becoming political battlegrounds. It’s critical that those working to feed the nation speak up.”
