Mark Williams has been re-elected as chairman of the British Egg Industry Council (BEIC) following the Annual General Meeting of the Council.
At the AGM, the BEIC also confirmed the re-election of its office holders. Elwyn Griffiths, representing the British Egg Products Association, remains deputy chairman. James Baxter, representing the British Free Range Egg Producers Association, and Phillip Crawley, representing the National Farmers’ Union, continue as vice chairmen. Jeffrey Vergerson, representing the British Egg Association, stays on as treasurer.
A new appointment was made for the role of secretary, with BEIC chief executive Nick Allen officially taking on the position having joined as BEIC chief executive in April this year.
Williams commented: “It’s a privilege to lead the BEIC and to work alongside such a dedicated team representing all parts of our fantastic industry. We’re in a good place at present, egg consumption continues to rise as customers look for a versatile, healthy, and tasty choice for meals, and production is increasing to meet that demand.
“We are confident that there is strong potential for further growth, but to achieve that we must remain focused on upholding the highest standards through the world-leading British Lion Code and guarding against the threat of imports that are of lower quality and welfare standards.
“Through the recently launched Back British Manifesto we’re calling on food businesses to stop using imported eggs in British-made food to ensure continued consumer confidence in British eggs and egg products. The campaign has rapidly gained support from MPs and food safety experts, and we will be lobbying hard to ensure that support grows.”
