A new salmonella vaccine, launched today at the Pig & Poultry Fair, is claimed to provide “earlier and stronger immunity” against the infection than previously existed and to remain effective for longer as well.
Salmovac 440, unveiled at the Fair by IDT Biologika, is a live vaccine which is given orally through the water supply in a three-dose regime to protect against both Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) and Salmonella Typhimurium (ST). IDT said the product also protects against other SE strains and the newly-emerging monophasic Salmonella Typhimurium strains.
“Salmovac 440 protects chicks after only six days, a week earlier than most other vaccines,” said IDT’s salmonella vaccine specialist, Dr Daniel Windhorst (pictured above). “It also remains effective for up to 63 weeks, after the third vaccination, providing an extra four weeks of protection.”
Asked how these comparative results had been arrived at, Dr Windhorst said they were based on a comparison of the effectiveness of the relevant vaccines, as stated by the companies behind each of the current vaccines.
Salmovac 440, which Hysolv Animal Health will be marketing in the UK and Ireland, has been approved for use by the British Egg Industry Council.
