Two new cases of avian flu have been confirmed in Devon.

One case of H5N1 HPAI was confirmed last week in a commercial pheasant flock at a premises near Seaton, East Devon, with a 3km Protection Zone and 10km Surveillance Zone declared on 8 August.

At the same time a second case was confirmed in a second commercial pheasant flock near Lifton in West Devon, with the same protection and surveillance zones set up around the premises.

Defra said that disease control zones will remain in place until all disease control and surveillance activities have been successfully completed and there are no suspected cases under investigation within the zones.

The current risk level of HPAI H5 in wild birds in Great Britain is rated as high, while the risk of poultry exposure is low (with high uncertainty) where there is suboptimal or poor biosecurity, and low (with low uncertainty) where there is good and consistent biosecurity.

Meanwhile, officials confirmed that following further testing at the avian influenza national reference lab at the APHA Weybridge laboratory, notifiable avian influenza is no longer suspected at the premises near Woodbridge, East Suffolk. The 3km and 10km temporary control zones surrounding this premises have therefore been revoked.
