Poultry processors are being urged to review their foreign body detection systems, with X-ray technology offering protection against contaminants that may be missed by metal detectors.
Ishida Europe X-Ray Business Manager Glen Oxborough said recent food recalls involving glass and metal highlighted potential limitations with existing inspection systems.
He said supply chain pressures, labour shortages and demands for faster production could increase the risk of foreign bodies entering products, while some metal detection critical control points may not be sensitive enough to detect certain materials or sizes.
Oxborough is urging processors to review their HACCP plans and consider modern X-ray inspection, which can detect contaminants including glass, bone and stones, as well as small metallic foreign bodies such as stainless steel.
X-ray systems can also operate on high-speed lines and in challenging applications, with Ishida’s IX-PD system offering high-sensitivity detection for high-risk applications including poultry.
The company has expanded testing facilities in Birmingham and Prague, allowing producers to trial systems and compare performance before investing.
