Around 400 jobs have been saved after 2 Sisters Food Group confirmed that its Bernard Matthews Derby food processing facility will remain open, having secured a new anchor customer.
The additional business provides sufficient operational demand to keep the Shaftesbury Street site running, reversing an earlier decision to close the facility.
However, under a revised operating model, around 100-150 roles remain at risk of redundancy and the company will re-enter consultation with employees and union representatives.
The business said its immediate priority was to stabilise the Derby workforce and integrate the new customer, providing a more sustainable platform for the site’s future.
Derby South MP Baggy Shanker, who worked with employees, trade union USDAW and the company to protect jobs, welcomed the decision.
He said retaining around 400 jobs was a “huge relief” for workers and their families, adding that the agreement provided a stronger foundation for the site’s future.
The company said it would continue working with local agencies and the MP to support those affected by the remaining redundancies and identify alternative employment opportunities.
