A new case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1 HPAI) has been confirmed in a commercial free-range laying flock with more than 10,000 birds at a premises near Penrith, Westmorland and Furness, Cumbria.
Following confirmation of the outbreak, Defra declared a 3 km Protection Zone and a 10 km Surveillance Zone around the affected premises at 17:05 on 18 October 2025.
These disease control zones place restrictions on the movement of poultry, other captive birds, and related materials to help prevent the spread of infection.
