Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has been confirmed in a commercial free-range laying flock near Belford, Northumberland.
A 3km Protection Zone and 10km Surveillance Zone were declared around the premises on 19 October.
The case is the first confirmed H5N1 outbreak in poultry in Great Britain this season.
It follows an H5N5 outbreak confirmed on 2 October in a small backyard flock of chickens in Ness, on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, where similar protection and surveillance zones were established.
The risk of HPAI H5 in wild birds across Great Britain is assessed as medium, while the risk of poultry exposure is considered low, both where biosecurity is poor and where good biosecurity is consistently applied, according to the latest assessment.
The BEIC has urged producers to maintain the highest levels of biosecurity and accurately record feed and water consumption to help identify potential health problems.
