NFU Scotland has warned that parts of the UK egg market are beginning to come under pressure as increased laying hen numbers and rising imports combine to soften prices.
While stressing that the long-term outlook for the sector remains positive, NFU Scotland Poultry Committee chairman Matthew Steel said producers should take current market conditions into account before investing in expansion.
“We are beginning to see signs of increased supply across the market, and that is having an impact on prices in some areas,” he said.
The union also called on the UK Government to ensure imported eggs are produced to standards equivalent to those required of Scottish producers.
Steel said domestic producers should not be forced to compete with eggs produced under conditions that would not be legal in the UK, arguing that doing so puts additional pressure on businesses already facing rising costs.
NFU Scotland said it would continue to press government and the supply chain to ensure fair competition while supporting a profitable and sustainable egg sector.
