Avian influenza has been confirmed in a commercial free-range laying flock near Biggar in the Scottish Borders, prompting the declaration of 3km Protection and 10km Surveillance Zones.
The H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak was confirmed on 2 November, with the control zones declared at 20:50 that evening.
It is the second H5N1 case confirmed in Great Britain since the start of the 2026/27 avian influenza season on 1 October, and the third confirmed HPAI outbreak across the UK, including an H5N5 case in a backyard flock on the Isle of Lewis.
The latest outbreak follows confirmation of H5N1 in a commercial free-range laying flock near Belford, Northumberland, on 19 October.
The risk of HPAI H5 infection in wild birds in Great Britain remains at medium, while the risk to poultry is assessed as low where biosecurity is suboptimal or poor, and very low where good biosecurity is consistently maintained.
The Scottish Borders control zones will remain in place until disease control and surveillance activities have been completed.
