Joice & Hill counts £2.1m salmonella cost

Joice & Hill Poultry has revealed that the salmonella outbreak which forced the temporary closure of its Eye hatchery this spring is expected to cost the business around £2 million, according to its latest annual accounts.

The company reported turnover of £16.1 million for the year ended 31 December 2025, up from £14.7 million in 2024. However, pre-tax profit fell to £826,667, compared with £2.82 million the previous year, largely because 2024 included exceptional investment-related income. Profit after tax was £625,780.

In a post balance sheet events note, the directors disclose that salmonella contamination occurred between 23 March and 10 April 2026, with the hatchery closed from 13-27 April.

The directors estimate the outbreak will result in approximately £1.5 million in compensation claims and around £600,000 in lost revenues.

Despite the subsequent disruption, the directors described 2025 as “another good year for egg producers”, citing sustained egg demand, stable feed prices and continued strong egg prices. They added that demand for the company’s Dekalb White layer continued to grow.

The report also highlights continued investment in automation, infrastructure and biosecurity, while warning that disease remains one of the sector’s greatest risks.

The directors said: “Three large clients have all suffered Avian Influenza within the last 12 months causing considerable losses and reduced production. The ripple effect of these losses is likely to continue for some time.”

The accounts provide the first official indication of the financial impact of the salmonella incident, which temporarily disrupted chick supplies before the hatchery resumed operations.
