A new case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1 HPAI) has been confirmed in a small backyard flock near Tow Law, Bishop Auckland, County Durham. The affected premises housed a mixed-species flock.
In response to the confirmed outbreak, Defra has declared a 3km captive bird (monitoring) controlled zone on 25 July 2025. Movement restrictions and enhanced surveillance measures are now in place to prevent further spread.
The case will be reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) as a non-poultry incident.
