The Avian Influenza Vaccination Taskforce has today published its report on the role of vaccination in managing highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).
The report confirms that stringent biosecurity on farm remains the most effective way of preventing infection. It also report recommends a series of actions, including an on-farm vaccination trial in turkeys and exploring laboratory capacity for surveillance purposes.
The British Poultry Council, which has contributed to the report and the debate around vaccination globally, welcomed its publication and the opportunity to take a thoughtful and evidence-based approach to living with avian influenza. It said it was essential to equip poultry keepers with the tools that allow them to protect their birds and maintain the resilience of the poultry meat supply chain.
“This report has been two years in the making and represents the trust and expertise at the heart of Government-industry partnership,” said Máire Burnett, BPC technical director. “It highlights the complexity of vaccination as an additional control measure and the need to prioritise what delivers the greatest impact for animal health, business continuity, and trade resilience – whether through targeted use or broader application (ie vaccinating at a regional level).
“Maintaining uninterrupted trade in both poultry meat and high-value breeding stock is a top priority for the sector. We are committed to continue our work with Government to strengthen preparedness and ensure robust and proportionate control measures.”
