A planning application for between 40 and 60 new broiler sheds will shortly be lodged with the Scottish government, Poultry Business has learnt, as part of plans by 2 Sisters to scale up production of chicken in Scotland to supply the Coupar Angus processing plant.
Balado Farms, in Kinross, is the farming business that will make the application. 2 Sisters needs to dramatically increase volumes of chicken produced in the area of the processing plant as part of plans to refurbish the site, which were approved last year.
The application will come hot on the heels of the rejected bid by Cranswick to build a new large poultry farm in Norfolk, which was turned down after a three year planning process on environmental grounds.
A source from 2 Sisters told PB it was confident it would win approval for the plans, which will involve demolishing the 65 year old broiler sheds currently on the site.
The company expects it to be treated favourably, as the Scottish chicken industry is a major employer in the region.
Last July, 2 Sisters won approval for a £100 million plan to demolish and rebuild the Coupar Angus processing plant on a neighbouring site to its current location. The factory employs more than 1,000.
