The NFU has today launched its vision for boosting poultry farm business resilience and climate-friendly farming.

The sector-specific plans, launched at the NFU’s annual conference, outline how farm businesses can unlock the benefits of increased efficiency and lower costs while improving the sustainable production of food, energy and fibre.

The plans map out three priority areas for the sector:

  • resource use efficiency, which covers carbon calculators and the best use of feed and manure management;
  • carbon storage, which covers sequestration through trees and hedges
  • renewables and the bio-economy, which covers how poultry producers can make the most of renewable energy.

Shropshire broiler grower James Mottershead is chair of the NFU Poultry Board for 2022–2024.

“The poultry sector is proud of its track record as a resilient, innovative and efficient industry, producing a cost-effective and nutritious protein for consumers,” he said. “As an industry we’ve already made great progress on reducing inputs and improving our productivity.

“With the combined challenges of rising input costs, climate change and avian influenza, it’s important that farmers, policymakers and the supply chain work together to maintain the resilience of the sector and ensure both financial and environmental sustainability for farmers.

“As an industry we’ve already made great progress on reducing inputs and improving our productivity, but there is more we can do that will not only help mitigate climate change but also improve the profitability and resilience of British poultry meat and egg production.”

Full details can be found on the NFU website.
