Salmonella outbreak linked to imported eggs leaves one dead

One person has died and 207 people have been infected in a UK outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis which investigators believe may be linked to imported eggs.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said 207 confirmed cases had been identified between 11 August 2025 and 1 August 2026, with 206 of those cases reported this year.

Of the total, 199 cases were in England, six in Scotland, one in Wales and one in Northern Ireland. London recorded the highest number of cases in England, with 47, followed by Yorkshire and the Humber with 38.

The outbreak has resulted in significant illness, with 38% of people for whom hospitalisation information was available admitted to hospital. Two people developed bloodstream infections and one person has died.

Investigations have identified five food businesses associated with 24 cases. The businesses received eggs from multiple suppliers, while potential cross-contamination events were identified at two premises.

UKHSA said evidence gathered so far suggests the outbreak is not associated with international travel, with only six of the 207 cases reporting travel outside the UK.

While investigations continue, authorities have found no identified link to UK-produced eggs or poultry.

The strain involved is genetically linked to a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak investigated in 2025, which was also linked to imported eggs.

UKHSA is working with the Food Standards Agency, Animal and Plant Health Agency and devolved administrations to investigate the outbreak and assess potential risks associated with imported eggs.
