A new plan from Defra is aiming to increase the proportion of agricultural land farmed organically from around 3.4% towards 10% by 2036, potentially creating opportunities for organic poultry and egg producers.
Launched by Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle on 14 October, the plan aims to help farmers capture a greater share of a domestic organic food market worth more than £3.9bn a year.
Measures include advice for farmers considering conversion to organic production, improved supply chains and efforts to increase consumer demand for English organic products.
However, the plan does not set specific targets or measures for organic poultry meat or egg production.
Dame Angela said: “People are buying more organic food, and we want English farmers to be in a strong position to respond to that demand.
“Our Organic Action Plan for England is about opening up opportunities across the sector, from backing farmers already producing organic food to helping others decide whether it could work for their businesses.”
