Two new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1 HPAI) have been confirmed in England, the third and fourth cases confirmed in the past week.
Defra announced last night that H5N1 has been detected at a commercial premises near Tiverton, Mid-Devon, Devon. The affected site housed both layer and meat ducks. In response, a 3km Protection Zone and a 10km Surveillance Zone have been declared around the premises, effective from 30 July 2025.
On the same day, another outbreak was confirmed at a commercial turkey growing flock near Attleborough, Breckland, Norfolk. Similar control measures, including 3km and 10km disease control zones, were also put in place.
These latest cases follow two others reported earlier this week one in Somerset involving game birds, and one in a backyard flock in county Durham.
With four outbreaks now confirmed within one week, Defra and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) are urging poultry keepers to maintain strict biosecurity and to report any signs of disease without delay.
Poultry and captive bird keepers in the affected areas are legally required to follow the movement restrictions and disease control measures set out within the declared zones.
