As a result of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers arresting approximately 680 people in raids at seven sites in six different cities in Mississippi on Wednesday, August 7, the National Chicken Council (NCC) has written to President Trump, seeking his help in securing a ‘working relationship’ going forward.
Penning a lengthy letter to the US President, the NCC submission begins: “As recent events have shown, the US chicken industry is heavily affected by our nation’s immigration policy. We are not in a position to comment on any specific incident and do not presume to do so, but we do wish to express serious concern about the ability of employers to ensure that they do not inadvertently hire an individual who is not eligible for employment.”
Later on the NCC comments: “The US chicken industry uses every tool available to verify the identity and legal immigration status of all prospective employees. Unfortunately, the government does not provide employers with a reliable verification method to prevent identity fraud and document falsification and confirm with confidence that new hires are legally authorized to work in the United States.”
And then, finally, appealing to President Trump’s business sense and experience, NCC adds: “The US chicken industry uses every tool available but as recent events have shown, these tools have significant flaws. As a businessman yourself you understand the difficulty in securing a legal workforce and the disruptions to commerce that arise when the tools provided are inadequate. We look forward to working with you immediately on this issue.”
