ADAS is to host an event in April for farmers examining the potential uses of insects as animal feed.
This workshop, organised by ADAS with support from the Royal Entomological Society, Multibox, the Royal Agricultural University, and Michelmores Solicitors, will bring together key scientists, industry representatives, policy makers and early innovators from across the UK.
Insects reproduce rapidly, have a high protein content, require relatively little water or land and can feed on a range of organic inputs. In 2017 ADAS and other partners ran a workshop on farming insects in the UK, which identified the priorities for the insect production industry.
Exactly one year on, another workshop is planned to review progress and help nurture the growing network of stakeholders. Since then, the EU has changed legislation to allow insect feed in aquaculture, and UK Novel Food Legislation has been amended to better account for insects for human consumption.
On 4 April 2018, this event held at Royal Agricultural University, Cirencester, will review the progress made over the last 12 months, and identify the next steps for the industry.
