British authorities have been warned by the European Union that eggs contaminated with the insecticide Fipronil could have entered the UK.
Fipronil is used protect crops as well as in veterinary medicine to kill off fleas, lice, ticks, roaches and mites. It is not allowed to be used in the production of food for humans.
Millions of eggs have been recalled from warehouses and shops in Germany and the Netherlands after Fipronil was found in Europe.
A spokeswoman for the EC stressed the decision to inform UK authorities was purely precautionary and there was no evidence contaminated eggs had entered the UK.
