The NFU poultry team is ‘liaising heavily’ with government, packers, members and the wider industry to get right to the heart of the German and Dutch egg contamination issue to ensure that its poultry members are kept ‘well informed’.
“Poultry members may have received a text message from the NFU on Thursday last week (August 3) notifying them of a concern from the APHA on the usage of this product (Fipronil),” says the union on its poultry information web page.
“The UK is adding Fipronil to the extensive list of substances for which UK eggs are tested under the annual residues surveillance programme.
“The NFU has spoken to the Egg Marketing Inspectorate (EMI) on numerous occasions over the past few days. They have confirmed that they are contacting egg producers and packers to establish if this product has been used in the UK industry.
“If members have any concerns they should contact their vet or their local EMI.”
The union statement also includes a brief review of what UK retailers are saying on the issue:
- A spokeswoman for Aldi UK said: ‘There’s is no impact on Aldi in the UK’.
- Asda told the Grocer: ‘Asda don’t accept shell eggs from the continent’.
- Sainsbury’s confirmed to the NFU that they are not affected by this recall.
