The National Office of Animal Health (NOAH) has co-funded the production of a video called “Beat the Bugs” as part of its effort to encourage the responsible use of antibiotics for both animals and people.
“A vital aspect of our role is to overcome the misunderstanding about how and why antibiotics are used in animals in the UK,” said NOAH’s Chief Executive, Dawn Howard, adding that, in addition to the video, the organisation has also developed a new range of technical briefing documents on the issues surrounding the use of antibiotics.
“Animals play many significant roles in the lives of the British public and NOAH has worked for over 30 years to promote the responsible use of animal medicines to ensure all animals have access to first class care in an effective, practical and sustainable way.”
Ms Howard also said that veterinary surgeons need to continue to have access to a range of antibiotics, so they can prescribe the one most appropriate for any specific bacterial disease situation.
“We support responsible use,” she said, “thereby helping to ensure the long-term effectiveness of these vital medicines, which are so important in preventing animal suffering.”
