Organic farming continued to grow across the UK in 2025, but government figures show organic poultry production remains a relatively small part of the industry.
According to Defra’s latest Agriculture in the United Kingdom statistics, the area of land farmed organically increased by 7.3% year on year to 540,000 hectares. Land undergoing conversion to organic production rose by 63% to 79,000 hectares, accounting for 15% of the UK’s total organic area and indicating further growth in the sector.
However, organic poultry continues to represent only a small share of UK production. The report recorded 4.76 million organically reared birds in 2025, equivalent to 2.6% of the national poultry flock.
Organic laying hens accounted for 2.23 million birds, representing 5.2% of the UK’s laying flock, while organic broilers totalled 2.38 million birds, just 2.0% of all broiler chickens. Other poultry species accounted for 139,000 birds, or 0.7% of the national total.
The figures suggest that while the UK’s organic sector is expanding overall, organic poultry production remains a niche market, with organic egg production achieving greater market penetration than organic chicken meat.
