Making silos smart

Collinson has introduced FeedAlert, which it hopes will prove a game changer in terms of managing silo feed levels

Managing silo feed levels and reordering can be challenging at the best of times. Most silos are fitted with level
indicator windows, but feed order quantities can only ever be an educated guess and this is fine until someone orders too much, too little or forgets altogether until the auger runs empty, and more often than not it’s the latter.

The stark reality of this is one way or another it all impacts your bottom line, adding hidden costs and headaches for all involved. With the advent of the FeedAlert silo monitoring solution from Collinson, users can choose from a range of high-tech silo monitoring solutions for all applications and budgets. The era of the smart silo has begun.

Silo monitoring, or to be more precise, inventory control, has the potential to change the face of feed supply so much that the whole industry will benefit, Collinson claims. It adds it would make a huge difference if decisions
could be made using reliable data, and for the biggest impact a low-cost solution was required – a system suitable for all makes of silo.

New to the range are Capture and Envision, low-cost and suitable for all makes of silo. Systems, which start from only £450, have already been very well received, it says. The system allows for the silo contents to be
weighed, and the monitoring sensor can quickly and simply be installed on the leg of the silo, making it the perfect solution for existing silos, with no need to lift the silo for load cells.

Data is transmitted to the cloud and can be easily viewed by the user on a display local to the silo, or for added convenience, the new app. Reliable data viewed via the smartphone app aids reliable feed re-ordering, and allows users to check daily usage and get a seven-day forecast. Configurable alerts can also be used to prompt users and feed producers to plan ahead for just-in-time deliveries.

FeedAlert digitises inventory control as an effective tool that can be used to increase operational efficiencies for all. Managing director Sam Collinson said: “We’ve had Genesis load cell monitoring for a number of years now, and it is very popular, but its accuracy goes way beyond what’s required for inventory control. Envision and Capture are an affordable solution that can be installed safely by end users on any silo in under 30 minutes. With the substantial investment in R&D we have committed, we are able to offer these products at mass market prices, despite their build quality and reliability. Also, having designed and manufactured the products ourselves end to end, we are in full control of the physical and digital products. We’re proud to have created a British weighing system and as always we are committed to the UK market’s requirements, which we know well.”
