Highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak confirmed in Russia

An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has been confirmed in Russia, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health.

It is the first outbreak recorded in the country since January 2021 and has affected just over 2,000 birds in a flock of 17,000. A surveillance and protection zone has been introduced around the site, in the Khudajberdinsky region and the affected birds have been culled.

The UK is due to declare itself officially free of avian influenza on 3 September.
