The launch of Defra’s new biosecurity grants marks an important moment for the poultry sector. These grants are the result of sustained involvement by representatives for the sector in various working groups and an example of where persistent advocacy for desired benefits pays off.
While it may not be perfect, the grant funding now on offer provides a good starting point to build from and one success is that for the first time, support is available not only for broilers, layers and breeders, but also for turkeys, ducks and geese — something the NFU fought hard to secure. The inclusion of turkeys, ducks and geese recognises the heightened risks these species face and the essential role they play in the diversity and resilience of UK poultry production.
With Avian Influenza continuing to challenge the sector, this funding is not just welcome, but it is necessary. The grants offer a chance to build long‑term resilience and demonstrate, once again, the professionalism that defines our sector.
Alongside this, I’m pleased to report further positive news with the recently launched Love British Chicken campaign which has shown just how powerful it can be when the sector comes together with a clear, upbeat message. The campaign has helped raise the profile of British poultry, highlighting to consumers the high standards of production in the UK and the care that farmers take in producing the nation’s favourite meat.
It has been encouraging to see such strong engagement, and we want this to be the start of sustained, long‑term promotion for British poultry production — not a one‑off moment but a platform we continue to build on.
Celebrating success is something we should be proud of and it’s one of the reasons I’m looking forward to the National Egg and Poultry Awards in July. As a judge, I have the privilege of seeing first‑hand the dedication, innovation and sheer hard work that individuals and teams bring to the table every single day. While this makes the job of a judge difficult, having so many deserving finalists makes it a nice problem to have! These awards shine a spotlight on the people who go above and beyond, and they remind us all just how much there is to be proud of.
Whether it’s securing vital biosecurity funding, championing British poultry to consumers, or recognising excellence across the sector, the common thread is clear; the poultry sector succeeds because of its people. Their resilience, ambition and commitment continue to drive us forward and with the right support and continued collaboration, the future of British poultry remains bright.
