Defra has confirmed several new outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 across England, bringing the total number of cases in the UK to 24 so far this season.
The latest case was detected on 4 November at a large commercial poultry premises near Wells-next-the-Sea in North Norfolk. A 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone have been declared around the site, and all birds on the premises will be humanely culled as part of disease control measures.
This follows a series of confirmed cases in recent days. On 3 November, outbreaks were reported at two large commercial units near Thirsk in North Yorkshire and Crediton in Mid Devon, as well as among captive birds near Danehill in East Sussex. Earlier in the week, further detections were made in North Yorkshire, Suffolk, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, and East Sussex.
So far this season, which began in October 2025, there have been 20 confirmed cases in England, three in Wales, and one in Northern Ireland, with no cases reported in Scotland.
