Stephen Morgan has become the new food security and rural affairs minister following a ministerial reshuffle, prompted by the resignation of both the defence secretary John Healey and the armed forces minister Al Carns.
The Portsmouth South MP was appointed on 12 June, replacing Dame Angela Eagle, who has moved to the Home Office and Cabinet Office as security minister.
Morgan has served as the Labour MP for Portsmouth South since 2017. His appointment brings a fresh face to Defra as ministers continue to oversee the transition from the Basic Payment Scheme.
The change comes only days after Defra announced a £240m budget for new Sustainable Farming Incentive agreements, underlining the pace of policy developments facing the department.
