A new full page press advert that appeared in all of the UK’s national newspapers over the weekend has emphasised the food safety credentials of British production methods.
The ad comes after the standards of eggs from outside the UK has been called into question due to Dutch eggs being contaminated with Fipronil, an insecticide used to treat red mites in poultry.
The contamination led to eggs and products with eggs in being pulled from shelves across Europe. The Food Standards Agency said it was continuing its work to trace egg products which might contain Fipronil. In most cases the identified products were past their expiry date but those remaining are being withdrawn immediately.
It remains very unlikely that there is any risk to public health, but as Fipronil is not authorised for use in food producing animals we are tracking down implicated food products and ensuring that they are removed from sale, the FSA said.
