Asda has launched a new wholesale supply model for independent retailers in the convenience market.
The three-store trial of the Asda Convenience format will initially roll out in Scotland in partnership with independent operator One-O-One, testing how retailers can run stores under the new fascia and bring the retailer’s value-led offer to more local communities.
The trial stores, located in Glasgow, aim to allow Asda to refine the model and assess how to scale it more widely across the UK.
Asda Convenience is described as distinct from the retailer’s existing, wholly owned Asda Express estate and has been developed specifically to support wholesale partnerships. Each store will stock around 3,500 products, including Asda own-label, fresh and chilled groceries, as well as food-to-go, at Asda’s traditional value prices.
The trial marks a step towards launching a wholesale supply model, which will see the retailer work with established independent retailers to deliver an Asda-branded convenience offer.
Joseph Sutton, Asda Express, fuel and wholesale director, explained: “Launching Asda Convenience is an important step in extending our reach and making Asda’s great value accessible to more customers in the way they want to shop today.
“By partnering with experienced independent retailers, we can combine our product range, pricing and supply chain strengths with their local expertise to create a truly compelling offer. This is just the beginning, and we see a real opportunity to scale this approach while building a broader wholesale business.”
