The Lion scheme has issued a derogation allowing the use of Avipro Salmonella Duo as an in lay Salmonella vaccination, following the vaccine receiving a licence for administration during lay as a fourth dose within the Salmonella vaccination programme.
BEIC confirmed the derogation takes immediate effect and will remain in place until the Lion Code of Practice is formally reviewed and updated to include in lay vaccination provisions.
Elanco, manufacturer of Avipro Salmonella Duo, has been working with egg producers, packers and veterinary practices since February 2026 to outline the procedures and training requirements linked to the use of the vaccine in laying flocks.
The Lion scheme has stressed that the use of in lay vaccination is not mandatory under the Code. Decisions on whether to use the additional vaccination should be taken by producers alongside their vet and Lion subscriber or packer, based on the circumstances of individual sites.
Under the derogation, laying farm operators may administer an additional Salmonella vaccination in lay provided all existing Lion Code requirements covering Salmonella vaccination continue to be met. Only vaccines holding a current UK Marketing Authorisation for use during lay may be used during the laying phase, and any pullets not vaccinated against Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium before housing will remain eligible for Lion egg production only if they have completed the required vaccination programme before transfer into laying accommodation.
The derogation marks the first formal route for in lay Salmonella vaccination within Lion egg production and introduces an additional option for producers and vets managing flock health programmes under the Lion Code.
