High pathogenic avian influenza confirmed in Netherlands

Two cases of H5N8 avian influenza have been confirmed in wild swans in the Netherlands.

Dutch authorities said the cases were discovered in Utrecht, and the agricultural ministry said it would now be consulting with experts to try and prevent transmission to poultry farms.

Defra and the European Union have urged producers to step up biosecurity measures in recent weeks, following several outbreaks in Russia and Kazakhstan.
