RSPCA Assured has released the latest version of the RSPCA’s welfare standards for chickens, with several updates aimed at improving to bird health and welfare on farm.
The new standards will come into effect from 29 September 2025, following the usual three-month notification period.
Among the main updates for producers are:
Housing contingency plans required: All producers will now need to create a contingency plan, with veterinary input, for times when birds may need to be housed indoors, such as during government housing orders. This ensures continued high welfare even when birds can’t access the range.
Tighter rules on antibiotics: A clear focus has been placed on responsible antibiotic use. Farms must also carry out an annual antibiotic use review as part of their veterinary health and welfare plan.
Abattoir technology encouraged: While not mandatory, the RSPCA is now strongly recommending the use of AI-driven camera systems in slaughterhouses to improve real-time monitoring and welfare oversight. This forms part of an ongoing review into how intelligent camera surveillance can help flag issues early.
Veranda installation recommended for free-range units: While encouraged, this is not a compulsory requirement at this stage.
Neil Scott, assistant director of certification at RSPCA Assured, said: “All RSPCA Assured members want the best for the animals in their care, and we hope these updated standards will help them to keep achieving their higher welfare goals.”
The updated standards are now available on the RSPCA Assured website. Producers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the changes well ahead of the September implementation date.
